Madge Ditmas began writing in 1922 for the old Arroyo Grande Herald Recorder. Many of the old pioneers were interviewed by her. Over the years, until her death in 1961, material from these interviews and her memories found their way into print.

All aspects of life in the area are extensively presented: horse racing, cattle ranching, sheep herding, bear baiting, Chumash Indians, mission days, Mexican land grants and the rancheros, the break up of the great ranchos and the pioneer period, death, birth, floods, farming, dances and much much more.

Over 300 pioneers of the valley are mentioned in 312 pages featuring 160 illustrations and photos.
